Adonis aestivalis, commonly known as Summer Pheasant's Eye, is a beautiful, medicinal and ornamental plant native to Europe but now found in western and eastern parts of the United States. This annual plant has a taproot and grows up to 18 inches in height. It blooms in June, with flowers that have both male and female organs and are pollinated by bees, flies, and beetles. The plant prefers moist, well-drained soil, and requires semi-shade or no shade. Adonis aestivalis is hardy to zone 5 and its seeds ripen in July. Besides being a great ornamental plant, it is a cardiotonic, diuretic, and stimulant herb. Its flowers are considered diuretic, laxative, and lithontripic. This beautiful plant is sure to make a great addition to any garden.
