Acer saccharum, Northern Sugar Maple, is a stunning deciduous tree that grows up to 120 ft tall and is native to the hardwood forests of northeastern North America. Featuring yellow-green flowers in April and May and double samara fruit with two winged seeds that fall from the tree in autumn, this tree is a beautiful addition to any landscape. Its foliage is equally impressive, with deciduous leaves that range from bright yellow through orange to fluorescent red-orange in the fall. It prefers acid, neutral, and alkaline soils and can grow in heavy clay soil. Sugar maple, of course, gets its name for having a higher sugar content in its sap, which is boiled down to make maple syrup. This hardy tree is suitable for planting in zone 6 and is tolerant of semi-shade and atmospheric pollution. With its hardiness, stunning foliage, and easy growth, the Northern Sugar Maple is an excellent choice for any outdoor space.
