Discover the Acer heldreichii ssp. trautvetteri, Red-bud Maple, a deciduous tree native to North Turkey and the Western Caucasus. Growing to an impressive 40-50 feet, these trees present a broadly columnar canopy and are recognized by their unique leaves and striking flowers. Their leaves, notable for being less deeply lobed than the typical species, have a dark-green shade, display a palmate venation, and burgeon into a vibrant yellow hue in the autumn. The petals of the erect five-stellate flowers the plant produces in May mesmerize with a brilliant greenish-yellow color. The tree’s red schizocarps are also typical, adding to its impressive display of natural beauty. Moreover, the tree reveals a smooth bark on the trunk which only starts peeling as the tree ages. Its buds, dark brown in color, exhibit bright red inner scales just before the leaves sprout in the spring. The tree is hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -10°F, and thrives best in a sunny or semi-shaded site in sandy or gritty loam soil. With its leaves spanning 10−15cm and edges sharply serrated to lobulate and fruits that are conspicuously red when young, this spectacular tree will undoubtedly contribute an illustrious presence to any landscape.
