Malus baccata, also known as Siberian Crab Apple, is an extremely hardy apple tree that can thrive in harsh conditions. With fragrant white flowers and dark red or yellow fruits that persist into winter, this tree is a beautiful addition to any landscape. The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked, and can even be dried for winter use or made into an excellent jelly. For wildlife, the Siberian crabapple provides cover and nesting sites for birds, as well as browse for rabbits and deer. It also attracts bees and other pollinators with its nectar-rich flowers. This tree is perfect for use in narrow or wide street tree lawns/pits, parks, and yards. It is often used in hybridizing to improve hardiness, and is widely used as an ornamental tree and for rootstock. As one of the most cold-resistant species of its genus, it is also used for experimental breeding and grafting of other crabapples and domestic apples. Its versatile uses and stunning appearance make it a worthwhile addition to any landscape.
