Discover the beauty of Maackia amurensis, commonly known as Amur Maackia or Chinese Yellow Wood. This tree can grow up to 20-30 ft tall and boasts gray-green, compound leaves that turn olive green as they mature. In June and July, admire the tree's 5-inch erect clusters of white flowers that exude a fragrance reminiscent of new mown grass. The bark is just as impressive, peeling as it matures to reveal a rich, shiny amber-brown with a curly texture. The wood is heavy and strong, making it perfect for indoor use, utensils, and tool handles. Native to Manchuria and named after the 19th-century explorer, Karlovich Maack, who discovered it on the border between Siberia and China. Amur Maackia is highly adaptable to severe dryness, cold, and heavy soils. A small round-topped tree, it is ideal for planting on streets or in confined urban spaces where the peeling bark stands out. Also, appreciate the springtime show of its unfolding silvery buds that resemble flowers frosted with ice.
