Ligustrum japonicum, commonly known as Japanese Privet or Wax-leaf Privet, is an adaptable broadleaf evergreen shrub makes a perfect addition to gardens in USDA Zones 8 to 10. It is native to Japan and Korea. Reaching heights of 6 to 12 feet and widths of 6 to 8 feet, it offers a dense, upright growth habit, ideal for creating lush hedges or as stand-alone ornamental pieces. Its glossy, dark green leaves provide an attractive year-round backdrop, enhancing any landscape with a touch of elegance.

Japanese Privet blooms from May to June, showcasing creamy white flowers that are not only showy but also attract butterflies. Though the flowers carry a distinctive aroma, they give way to ornamental black drupes come fall, adding seasonal interest through the winter months. Highly tolerant of urban conditions, drought, and salt spray, Wax-leaf Ligustrum thrives in average, well-drained soils with full sun to part shade, displaying its best hues in partial shade.

Ideal for both formal and informal gardens, this resilient plant can be pruned into various topiary forms, such as globes and pyramids, or trained as a small tree. However, gardeners should be mindful of its invasive potential in certain regions of the U.S. Despite minor susceptibilities to pests and diseases, Ligustrum japonicum remains a popular choice for hedges, natural landscaping, and screening, offering splendid evergreen foliage and reliable growth in diverse conditions.
