Leycesteria formosa, also known as Himalayan Honeysuckle, Flowering Nutmeg, Himalayan Nutmeg, or Pheasant Berry, is a stunning deciduous shrub in the Caprifoliaceae family. With soft, hollow, upright green stems that only last for 2-5 years before being replaced by new stems, this plant produces dark green leaves and small, white flowers that grow on pendulous racemes. The plant also produces soft, purple-black berries, which are eaten by birds that disperse the seeds. Leycesteria formosa is native to the Himalayas and southwestern China, and has become popular in Victorian shrubberies. Although it is considered a noxious invasive species in some areas, new cultivated varieties of this plant have been introduced in garden centers, making it a perfect addition to your garden. Another interesting feature of this plant is that the hollow stems can be made into whistles and flutes. Grow Leycesteria formosa in moist, shady places under forest or forest margins; it grows best at an altitude of 1500-3000m.
