Heptacodium miconioides, also known as Seven Son Flower or Seven Son Tree, is a deciduous large shrub or small tree that typically grows to a height of 15-25 ft. It belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family and is considered rare, with only nine populations known to exist in the wild, all in Anhui and Zhejiang provinces of China. The plant produces fragrant white blooms in September that attract butterflies and bumblebees. When the corollas fall, the calyces develop into deep red expanded lobes that persist into November. Heptacodium miconioides is easy to propagate and tolerant of temperatures as low as −31°F. The plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and has antibacterial compounds in its extracts. Grow it in your garden to enjoy its beautiful blooms and foliage!
