Precoce Migoule Chestnut is a remarkable hybrid between European chestnut (Castanea sativa) and Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata). This tree, named for its origin in the orchard of Migoule in Brive-la-Gaillarde, is celebrated for its vigorous, erect growth, achieving a height of up to 60 ft with a spread of 25-35 ft. Ideal for temperate climates, Precoce Migoule thrives in areas where grapes are also cultivated, showcasing impressive cold hardiness down to -20°F and performing well up to altitudes of 1640 ft on south-west facing slopes.

This early-ripening cultivar is perfect for northern climates prone to early frosts, generating reliable yields from mid-September to early October. It begins nut production 3 to 5 years after planting, reaching full production in 12 to 20 years. Expect medium to large, light mahogany-colored nuts of excellent flavor, perfect for fresh consumption due to their easy peeling and good storage. The tree exhibits moderate resistance to blight but benefits from grafting onto rootstocks like Marsol or Marigoule for enhanced disease resistance. An exceptional pollinator itself, it complements other chestnut varieties, ensuring robust nut production and orchard vitality. Zones 4-8.
