Introducing the Rhododendron aureum, also known as Golden Rhododendron! This evergreen shrub is native to high mountain areas of East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. It thrives in alpine and sub-alpine thickets, as well as grasslands or liverwort-mosses strata at elevations of 1000-2500 metres. Growing up to 0.5m in height and 1m in width, it is hardy to zone 2 in the UK and blooms in May with bright yellow, campanulate flowers. This plant prefers well-drained, moist, and acidic soil and can grow in semi-shade or no shade. Its flowers are used in Tibetan medicine as an antirheumatic, diaphoretic, and haemostatic agent, although caution is advised due to their toxicity. The Golden Rhododendron is an excellent addition to any woodland garden or shady edge, and its surface-rooting habit allows it to coexist with other trees. Grow your own Rhododendron aureum from seed in a greenhouse, and enjoy this showy shrub for years to come!
