Looking for a shrub to add some color and texture to your landscape? Look no further than Spiraea douglasii, also known as Douglas's Spirea or Rose Spirea! This native plant to western North America is a woolly shrub that can grow up to 6 ft tall and form dense thickets. In early summer, large clusters of small pink flowers form spires, later turning dark and persisting. The leaves are toothed toward the tips, with whitish undersides and prominent veins. Spiraea douglasii prefers riparian habitat types such as swamps, streambanks, bogs, and mudflats, where it supports a variety of wildlife. While used as an ornamental in landscaping, this plant is also useful for making brooms and hanging seafood to cook, according to Native American tradition. Though invasive in Europe, Spiraea douglasii still makes a lovely addition to any North American garden or landscape.
