Pennisetum alopecuroides, also known as Chinese Fountaingrass or Chinese Pennisetum, is a graceful ornamental grass native to Asia and Australia. It is a garden favorite with its cascading foliage that rustles in the wind, creating a sense of nonstop drama. This grass grows in rounded mounds of dark green foliage, turning golden yellow or beige in the fall.
From early summer to early fall, enjoy soft, fluffy flowers, resembling large foxtails, that appear on arching stems. These reddish-purple to coppery tan blooms make excellent cut flowers for both fresh and dried arrangements.
Fountain Grass is versatility personified. Adapting to any garden style, it works as a standalone specimen plant and thrives in groups or en masse. It decorates beds and borders, and is stunning beside ponds or streams where its form is beautifully reflected in the water. Use it to add texture, color, and contrast to your garden or pot it in containers.
Fountain Grass performs best in full sun and prefers fairly dry, well-drained soils but tolerates part shade and moist conditions too. Once established, it's drought-resistant and has no significant pest or disease issues. Plus, it's deer-resistant!
In late winter, simply cut back the old foliage. Propagate by seed or division in spring. Enjoy these blush-colored bottlebrush plumes all summer until mid-autumn when they turn a magnificent almond color, enhancing the beauty of fall gardens. This hardy plant is the perfect blend of beauty and simplicity, creating a stunning landscaping display with minimal maintenance.
