Cephalotaxus harringtonia, also known as Harrington's Cephalotaxus or Japanese Plum Yew, is an evergreen shrub that can reach up to 5 meters in height. It is hardy to zone 7 and prefers moist soil with either acid, neutral or alkaline pH. This species grows well in both full and semi-shaded areas, making it perfect for gardens or landscaping. Its new shoots remain green for three years after forming and have ribs at the leaf bases. The leaves are a bright matte yellowish-green on the upper surface and have two broad, pale to silvery stomatal bands underneath. The male and female flowers are borne on separate plants and are pollinated by wind. The fruit is obovoid shaped and turns from pale green to brown when ripe. Fun fact: an Australian pharmaceutical company, ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is developing a leukemia therapy derived from this yew. Overall, Harrington's Cephalotaxus is a unique and visually appealing plant that can add interest to any garden or landscape.
