If you're a fan of winter squashes, then you're sure to love the Cucurbita pepo 'Dark Green Zucchini' - a favorite heirloom variety that is an early bush zucchini that produces a high yield of straight, dark green, cylindrical fruit. Best harvested when under 10 inches for the best flavor, the fruits are loaded with vitamins and minerals but are surprisingly low in calories! This annual climber is fast-growing and matures in just 45 to 65 days. Plant seeds after all danger of frost has passed in well-drained soil that is preferably light to medium in texture. Requiring semi-shade to no shade, this zucchini prefers a moist soil and is hardy to zone 10 but is frost-tender. Enjoy it sliced and grilled, or use it to make zucchini bread or muffins. No matter how you prepare it, you're sure to appreciate the delicious taste and health benefits of this versatile squash plant!
