Paeonia anomala, also known as Anomalous Peony, is a perennial gem that thrives in diverse environments—from woodlands to sub-alpine slopes—throughout its natural range spanning from China to the Urals of southern Siberia and beyond. This remarkable peony boasts thick, carrot-shaped taproots and vibrant greenery, forming a perfectly hemispherical mound. Its exquisite and outward-facing pink saucer-shaped blossoms bloom from April to June, each featuring a glowing heart of yellow stamens and striking green carpels. These nodding, dusty lavender-pink flowers are held aloft on sturdy stems, adding charm and elegance to any garden space. Ideal for zones 4 through 9, this peony flourishes in average to moist, humus-rich soil, preferring part shade yet adaptable to full sun. Its fern-like foliage, with cleanly serrated edges, cascades gracefully, offering depth and visual appeal. Truly a landscape standout, Paeonia anomala is not only hardy and disease-resistant but also pest-resistant, making it a magnificent, low-maintenance addition to any garden.

This species is similar to P. veitchii, but can be distinguished by its single-flowered stems.
