Himalayan Cypress (Cupressus torulosa), aslso known as Bhutan Cypress, is a majestic evergreen tree that stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur. Its native roots trace back to the towering regions of the Himalayas, where it thrives at altitudes between 980 to 9,100 ft. Reaching heights of up to 150 ft, this magnificent conifer is celebrated for its elegant, pyramidal form and stunning green to blue-green foliage. With its broad base and narrow-conical top, Himalayan Cypress is notable for its striking resemblance to the Italian Cypress.

Not only is this tree a visual delight, but it also boasts remarkable resilience. Its potent resistance to cypress canker makes it an excellent choice for shelter belts and avenue plantings, particularly where trimming is challenging. Its branchlets, with whip-like sprays and flattened leaves, carry a delicate new-mown grass scent when crushed. The tree features inconspicuous male cones and abundant female cones, which transition from green to purplish-black, ripening to a warm red-brown.

Cupressus torulosa is adaptable to free-draining soil and offers great versatility, serving as both a vertical accent and an effective hedge. Its robust, rot-resistant timber is ideal for construction, while its unique beauty can enhance any garden landscape. Despite its many merits, this near-threatened species remains a rarity, offering a unique opportunity for preservation and admiration. Whether used for its aesthetic value or its practical benefits, the Himalayan Cypress stands as a symbol of enduring elegance and strength.
