Hesperocyparis macrocarpa - Monterey Cypress, is a native evergreen tree endemic to the central coast of California. With a lifespan of up to 2000 years, this species has survived the test of time in its natural habitat of cool, humid summers, constantly bathed by sea fog. Its foliage is bright green and grows in dense sprays, while its seed cones mature from green to brown over 20-24 months, releasing their pollen in late winter or early spring. Although it is confined to two small populations near Monterey and Carmel, it has become an excellent choice for fast-growing hedges in the milder areas of Britain, tolerating maritime exposure. This tree is characterized by its good salt tolerance, hardiness, and strength, which makes it useful for general construction. This genuinely beautiful tree with flat-topped, horizontal branches and good dark green foliage is a unique addition to any garden or landscape.
