Scirpus atrovirens, also known as Dark Green Bulrush, Green Bulrush, and Meadow Rush, is a beautiful grass-like plant that can grow up to 4 1/2 feet tall. It is a rhizomatous marginal aquatic perennial that is native to moist meadows, bogs, and wet depressions in Eastern and Central North America. The foliage is grass-like, broad, and yellow-green to dark-green with rough edges. The terminal inflorescence contains many spikelets that are crowded into dense, nearly spherical heads on rays that angle out in different directions. The spikelets are dark green in late spring and mature to brown in mid-summer, remaining attractive well into fall. Scirpus atrovirens is perfect for marshes, moist meadows, and stream/river/lake margins, and can grow in elevations up to 3000 ft. It is a slow-spreading plant that forms a clump of upright stems over time. Its foliage turns yellow-brown in fall. The plant occasionally hybridizes with other related species, but it is distinct with its nodulose leaves and brownish spikelet heads.
