Acer saccharum (Sugar Maple) is a deciduous tree can grow up to 120 ft in height and is native to the hardwood forests of northeastern North America.
In April and May, Sugar Maple blooms with green flowers, which are pollinated by insects. The seeds ripen from October to December and have a brown color. During the fall season, the foliage of this tree becomes conspicuous with its vibrant green color. They thrives in a variety of soil types, and can grow in semi-shade or no shade, but it requires moist soil to thrive.
Not only is Acer saccharum visually appealing, but it also offers practical benefits. Its high abundance of fruits/seeds makes it an excellent source of fuelwood and pulpwood. Additionally, it produces lumber and veneer products, making it valuable in the woodworking industry. Its palatable browse and potential for providing shade for animals further enhance its ecological significance. Sugar maple, of course, gets its name for having a higher sugar content in its sap, which is boiled down to make maple syrup.
The seeds offered here come from the northern portion of the species' range and are better adapted to growing in zones 4-6. Plant them now to add beauty and value to your landscape for years to come!
