Cornus mas, also known as Cornelian cherry, is a medium to large deciduous shrub or small tree that reaches a height of 5-12 meters and boasts dark brown branches and greenish twigs. It produces small yellow flowers with 4 petals in clusters of 10-25 before the leaves appear, and oblong red drupe fruits that are edible when ripe and used for making jam or as a snack when eaten with salt. The wood of C. mas is dense and sinks in water, making it valuable for crafting tool handles and machines. This versatile plant is also grown for its ornamental value, with early yellow flowers that make a great landscape accent. Cornus mas is an excellent small tree that thrives in the Midwest U.S according to Michael Dirr’s book, The Manual of Woody Landscape Plants.
