Catalpa ovata, also known as Chinese Catalpa, Japanese Catalpa, or Yellow Catalpa, is a beautiful pod-bearing tree native to China. Its creamy white flowers, which bloom in July and August, are considered to be one of the best bee plants in Japan and are extremely fragrant. The tree typically reaches heights between 20 and 30 feet and has three-lobed dark green leaves, which are very similar in shape to those of Paulownia tomentosa. The bark of mature trees is fissured, prominently ridged and pale gray-brown. While native to China, Catalpa ovata is commonly found in North America and Europe. Its fruits are narrow, foot-long pods, and it is commonly used to make the undersides of qin. The stems of this tree also have medicinal benefits and are known for its diuretic effects. If you are looking for a unique and fragrant addition to your garden, the yellow catalpa may be the perfect fit for your space.
