The Bauhinia Purpurea, also known as the Hawaiian Orchid Tree, Hong Kong Orchid Tree, Purple Bauhinia, and Purple Camel's Foot, is a beautiful species of flowering plant in the Fabaceae family. Native to South China and Southeast Asia, this small to medium-sized deciduous tree grows up to 17 feet tall, with leaves that are rounded and bilobed at the base and apex. Its fragrant white or purple flowers, up to 5 inches in size, are borne in profusion. Not to be confused with Bauhinia Blakeana, it is often planted as an ornamental roadside and garden plant. The leaves, flower buds, flowers and young pods are eaten as a vegetable and the flower buds are often pickled. While it is admired for its beauty, the plant also holds medicinal value in many countries where it is used to treat health problems like ulcers, wounds, and swollen glands. Its leaves are even used as fodder in places such as Nepal. Easy to cultivate in tropical regions, the Bauhinia Purpurea is a must-have for anyone looking to add some exotic flair to their garden.
