Looking for an elegant shade tree for your backyard? Consider the Ulmus crassifolia, or Cedar Elm. This medium to large deciduous tree can grow up to 70 feet high and 60 feet wide, with a rounded crown of drooping branches and the smallest leaves of any native elm. Its leaves are small, rough-textured, and cedar-like in appearance, and distinguish it from other elm trees. In the late summer or early fall, the Cedar Elm produces small reddish-purple wind-pollinated flowers, followed by small winged samaras. This tree grows well in moist limestone soils along water courses with other bottomland trees, but can also grow on dry limestone hills. With its strong wood and high adaptability, Cedar Elm is often used for ornamental shade and is a favorite among birds for its seed.
