Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as juneberry or serviceberry, is a stunning deciduous shrub that grows up to 6 meters tall. It boasts star-shaped white flowers in spring, followed by edible black berries in June and July. The leaves open up as coppery-red, turn to soft green in summer, and transform into shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn. This form of serviceberry shrub is highly prized for its ornamental value and has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is widely cultivated across Europe, where it has been naturalized, and is popularly used as a specimen plant or in mixed borders. The fruit has a delicious and sweet apple-like flavor, making it a favorite among both humans and birds. A. lamarckii is also an apomictic microspecies and presumed to have originated from a hybrid of A. laevis and either A. arborea or A. canadensis, giving it its botanical name Amelanchier × lamarckii. This plant thrives in light to heavy soil and prefers moist soil, making it ideal for creating a colorful and charming garden landscape.
