Cilician Fir, also known as the Taurus Fir, is a stunning conifer that can reach heights of 80-100 ft. Its bark is smooth and ash-grey, becoming deeply fissured into scaly plates. The tree's branches are ascending, and its needles spread upwards and forwards, with a beautiful dark green color above and whitish green below. These trees also produce female cones that are cylindrical and reddish-brown in color. The cones contain obovoid wings to 2 cm long and reddish-brown seeds. The Cilician Fir grows naturally in Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey, with a subspecies endemic to Turkey. Despite being the predominant species in the Abeti-Cedrion forests of the Middle and Eastern Taurus Mountains, these forests have been reduced to enclaves due to over 5000 years of logging, burning, and grazing. Interestingly, resin from the Cilician Fir was used in ancient times for mummification, as an antiseptic, a diuretic, and to promote hair growth.
