Cilician Fir, also known as the Taurus Fir, is a stunning conifer that can reach heights of 80-100 ft. Its bark is smooth and ash-grey, becoming deeply fissured into scaly plates. The tree's branches are ascending, and its needles spread upwards and forwards, with a beautiful dark green color above and whitish green below. These trees also produce female cones that are cylindrical and reddish-brown in color. The cones contain obovoid wings to 2 cm long and reddish-brown seeds. The Cilician Fir grows naturally in Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey, with a subspecies endemic to Turkey. Despite being the predominant species in the Abeti-Cedrion forests of the Middle and Eastern Taurus Mountains, these forests have been reduced to enclaves due to over 5000 years of logging, burning, and grazing.
