Discover the beauty and versatility of Aesculus turbinata, the Japanese Horse Chestnut, a tree native to Japan but cultivated worldwide. A striking specimen plant, it thrives in deep, loamy, well-drained soil and prefers continental climates. Though its dormant stage is frost resistant, its young spring growth may need protection from late frosts. The tree flaunts attractive foliage and showy blooms, reaching a height of up to 70 ft. Its flowers are a stunning white to pale yellow, tinged with red spots, and its dark brown capsules complement the vibrancy of its blooms. Harvest its seeds and leach them to use traditionally as food. But that's not all! The seeds also contain saponins which serve as a soap substitute, great for washing clothes or bodies, though be prepared for its distinctive horse chestnut odor! The Japanese Horse Chestnut's wood is weak but finely grained, suitable for domestic house fittings and tools. Plant its seeds outdoors or in a cold frame as soon as it's ripe. It requires careful handling as the seeds have limited viability and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. Enjoy this nature's spectacle right in your landscape!
