Looking for a plant that is native to the US and thrives in low, moist areas? Look no further than Vernonia noveboracensis, also known as Ironweed, N.Y. Ironweed, and New York Ironweed. This herbaceous plant has alternate, simple leaves on stiff, greenish purple stems and produces stunning purple flowers in the summer and fall. While it may be rather coarse, its narrow pointed leaves and clusters of 1/2" tubular flowers lend it a certain handsomeness. Native to the eastern US, from Massachusetts to Georgia and west to Ohio and Mississippi, Vernonia noveboracensis is a unique and impressive addition to any garden.
