This species of Lilac is native to eastern Asia, and is the largest of the family, growing up to 49' tall. It's a deciduous tree with elliptic-acute leaves and produces creamy-white fragrant flowers in broad panicles in early summer. The fruit is a dry, smooth brown capsule that splits in two to release the seeds. It's a popular ornamental tree in Europe and America, as it's easy to grow and tolerates urban conditions well. It's best suited to cool summer climates and is effective as a specimen in the landscape or as a screen along property lines. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
