Introducing the Bristly Locust (Robinia hispida var. fertilis) – the best erosion control shrub for steep sloping sites with active erosion. Native to the southeastern United States, this shrub provides quick, woody, vegetative cover on droughty, critical areas needing stabilizing cover. With the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, it excels in seedling vigor and can be used to stabilize soils with active rill and gully erosion. Ideal for surface mine spoil reclamation, industrial waste piles, roadbanks, and cuts and fills, the Bristly Locust adapts well to acid soils with a pH of 3.5 to 4.0 and alkaline soils of a pH 8.0. While it may not offer much in terms of wildlife food, it makes up for this with its attractive pink or pale purple blooms.
