Prunus americana, commonly known as American Plum, Wild Plum, or Marshall's Large Yellow Sweet Plum, is a North American species of Prunus plant that is widely used for both ornamental and culinary purposes. This shrub or small tree can grow up to 15 feet and features beautiful white flowers in the spring, making it a popular residential landscape tree. Farms also use it as windbreaks and for highway or riverside plantings due to its ability to reduce wind velocity near the ground and effectively stabilize stream banks and gullies with root suckers. Birds and animals are also attracted to its delicious fruit, and it has even been used by Native Americans. With over 200 cultivated varieties, this species is a great stock for grafting domestic plum plants and offers both sweet and sour fruit that can be eaten fresh or processed into preserves, jellies, jam, and wine.
