Eastern White Pine, also known as Pinus strobus, is a large pine tree native to eastern North America. It is a popular ornamental and landscape tree that can grow up to 200-250 years old, and some have even been known to live over 400 years. This tree prefers full sun and well-drained soil, but can also tolerate light shade. It produces bluish-green needles that are flexible and finely serrated, and cones that are slender and wind-dispersed. Eastern White Pine is also an important timber tree, with wood that is especially suited for making ship masts, lumber, furniture, and house interiors. Medicinally, Eastern White Pine has been used for its antiseptic, expectorant, and respiratory system benefits. It is also a source of edible seeds, and the needles can be brewed into an aromatic tea rich in vitamins A and C.
