Styrax officinalis ssp. redivivus (or just S. redivivus) is commonly known as Drug Snowbell, Bitternut, California Styrax, Chaparral Snowbell, and Snowdrop Bush. An uncommon native gem from California, it adorns open grassy spaces in northern, southern and central parts, at elevations of 0-5000 feet. This medium-sized shrub is charmingly delicate, blossoming large white flowers at the dawn of spring, followed by persistent yellow fruits continuing well into summer. They are accompanied by leaves that graciously change color in autumn before falling. Its growth flourishes in partial shade with acidic, organically rich, sandy loams of medium moisture. This shrub remarkably has a pleasant shape if pruned correctly during winter and is known for its drought resistance once fully established. Experience the charms of this attractive shrub as it fills your gardens with winter to summer transformations.
