Looking for an evergreen shrub that not only adds structure to your garden but also emits a powerful perfume? Look no further than the Sarcococca ruscifolia, also known as Common Sarcococca, Fragrant Sarcococca, Fragrant Sweetbox, or Sweetbox. This shrub, native to central and western China, boasts shiny 2" x 1" leaves and fragrant white flowers that bloom in April, emitting a vanilla scent that can stop you in your tracks. It also produces small round red fruit to 1/4" and grows well in dry shade, making it an easy plant to care for. Its ability to thrive in deep shade adds even more appeal, making it an excellent addition to any garden. S.ruscifolia can grow between 3 to 5 feet (90 cm to 1.5 m), while the compact version, S.hookeriana var. humilis, grows to only 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cm). Plant this shrub en masse or use as a hedge for maximum fragrance and effect.
