Macadamia Integrifolia or more commonly known as Macadamia Nut is an evergreen tree, belonging to the Proteaceae family, is native to Queensland, Australia and can grow up to 30 ft at a slow rate. Revel in its charming white or pinkish flowers, followed by woody, rounded fruits of 2 to 3.5cm in diameter. Enjoy the sweet and delicious seeds, raw or cooked, which can be added to cakes, biscuits, ice cream, or ground into flour to add protein value to cereals. Please beware that the shell is hard, making the seed extraction a bit tricky. Yet, the exertion is all worth it, as you get an edible oil from the seed as well.
For best results, these plants should be watered heavily in their early stages, especially in the summer. Despite this early necessity for water, established plants are extremely drought resistant. Being strictly a sun-loving plant, it cannot grow in the shade. However, they are quite resilient and can bear slight frosts. It favors well-drained, moist soil conditions
These trees can be propagated by seeds and are best sown in a warm greenhouse. Note that the dehusked seed germinates quickly at 75°F. When the seedlings grow large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Later, move them to their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Embrace the durability and versatility of Macadamia Integrifolia, a gift from nature that keeps on giving!
