Hydrangea quercifolia, also known as Oakleaf Hydrangea, is a stunning species of hydrangea native to the Southeastern United States. This coarse deciduous shrub grows up to 7 ft tall with an open crown and sprouts shoots from underground stolons, often forming colonies. Its leaves are yellowish-green on top and downy-white underneath with lobed foliage, similar to oak leaves. The plant produces white flowers in erect clusters in early summer, aging from creamy white to pink and eventually to a dry, papery rusty-brown. In the fall, the leaves turn rich shades of red, bronze and purple, persisting through winter. Oakleaf hydrangea prefers moist, acid organic soils in partial shade or full sun and grows best in a natural or landscaped woodland habitat. It is commonly grown in gardens as an ornamental plant. Oakleaf Hydrangea is a must-have for landscape designers looking to add beauty and texture to their projects.
