Add a unique touch to your garden with Catalpa bungei, also known as Manchurian catalpa. This deciduous tree grows up to 10 meters in height and produces attractive triangular-ovate or ovate-oblong leaves that are dark green on the upper surface. The corymbose-racemose inflorescences are densely spotted with pink, making it a great ornamental tree for gardens and parks. Catalpa bungei prefers moist loamy soil and a sunny position that is not exposed, but can also tolerate heavy clay soils. It is very resistant to atmospheric pollution and hardy in continental climates down to about -15°C. The stem bark is traditionally used to make a lotion for cancer, and the leaf, stem bark, and seeds are used as dressings for sores and boils. Sow the seeds outdoors as soon as they are ripe and transplant them into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer after the last frost. Catalpa bungei will add a unique and attractive aspect to any garden setting.
