Abies lasiocarpa, also known as Subalpine Fir or Rocky Mountain Fir, is a beautiful evergreen tree found in western North America. It grows up to 80 ft tall and features a very narrow conic crown and smooth grey bark, becoming fissured on mature trees. The needles are flat and needle-like, with a broad stripe of stomata and blue-white bands below. This tree is typically found at high altitudes, from 980-3,000 ft in the north to 7,800-12,000 ft in the south, and is commonly found at and immediately below the tree line. The wood is used for structural purposes and paper manufacture, or as a popular Christmas tree. Subalpine Fir's ornamental qualities are also appreciated, with its strikingly glaucous-blue foliage making it an attractive addition to any landscape.
