Looking for a unique addition to your home garden or farm? Consider the Canavalia ensiformis Giant Stock Bean! Also known as the Gotani Bean, Horse Bean, Jack Bean, Swordbean, Wonder Bean, or Wonderbean, this climbing plant is commonly cultivated in Bombay, India, and is used for its delicious, edible pods. It's also grown to a smaller extent in Burma and the Philippines. This plant is native to tropical regions, including Africa, the East Indies, Mexico, Brazil, and the West Indies. Its deep roots make it resistant to drought and it can spread via long runners. The pink-purple flowers of the Canavalia ensiformis are beautiful and the pods can grow up to 36 centimeters long with large white seeds that are perfect for eating. Though it may look coarse, once sliced and boiled, the pod is exceedingly tender and tastes similar to French beans. This plant is loved by both Europeans and the natives of its native region, making it a great addition to any garden or farm.
