Amelanchier alnifolia var. Smokey Saskatoon Berry, also known as the Saskatoon Serviceberry, is a versatile deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow up to 8 meters in height. It features oval to nearly circular leaves with toothed margins, which can grow up to 5 cm long, and produces fragrant white flowers on racemes in spring. The fruit is a small, purple pome that is 5-15 mm in diameter and ripens in early summer. Smokey is one of the leading commercial varieties in Canada, known for its deliciously sweet and juicy fruits with a hint of apple flavor. The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked, and can also be dried and used as raisins or made into pemmican. The leaves can be used as a tea substitute. This shrub is native to North America and can be found from Alaska to western Canada and the western and north central United States. It forms colonies and bears fruit reliably every year. It is also rich in iron and copper. Learn more about this amazing plant at http://plants.usda.gov.
