Looking for a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant for your garden? Consider Viburnum lantana, also known as the Wayfaring Tree. This species of Viburnum is native to Europe, Northern Africa, and Western Asia, and is perfect for hedges, screens, and other landscaping purposes. In May, the Wayfaring Tree boasts profusions of creamy white, scentless flowers in flat-topped clusters up to 5 inches wide. The tree's leaves are dark green or blue-green, occasionally turning purplish red in fall. Additionally, the 1/3 inch fruit changes from yellow to red to black on the same tree. This deciduous shrub grows to be 10-15 ft tall and thrives in alkaline soils. Its berries, which are mildly toxic, can cause vomiting or diarrhea if eaten in large amounts. With its low maintenance needs and beautiful blooms, Viburnum lantana is a great addition to any garden.
