Looking for a beautiful and unique addition to your garden or landscape? Consider Staphylea bumalda - Bumald Bladdernut! This deciduous suckering shrub features delicate white flowers in May or June, followed by eye-catching inflated yellowish fruits to 1". Its opposite compound leaves have three 2" leaflets, and the plant is native to Japan, Korea, and China, where it grows in woods and along streams. Staphlea bumalda is easy to grow in sun or part shade, and is capable of tolerating a wide range of soils so long as they are not too dry. The shrub typically grows to 4-6' tall and as wide, and its fragrant flowers give way to somewhat compressed two-lobed fruits (seed capsules to 1" long). Notably resistant to honey fungus, this shrub prefers a rich loamy soil in full sun or semi-shade. Bumald Bladdernut is generally hardy to about -13°F and will flower best in hot summers.
