Introducing Sorbus scopulina Greene's Mountain Ash, also known as Western Mountain Ash. This shrubby species boasts beautiful white flowers, compound leaves, and orange to scarlet 1/4" round fruit. Native to the Rocky Mountains and spanning from California to British Columbia, this deciduous shrub can grow up to 4 meters and is hardy to zone 5. The plant is in flower in May, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by insects. Sorbus scopulina prefers light, medium, and heavy well-drained soil, and can grow in semi-shade or no shade. It requires moist soil and can tolerate strong winds but not maritime exposure.
