Rosa sericea, commonly known as Silky Rose or Winged Thorn Rose, is an enchanting rose species, unique for its four-petaled flowers. This exquisite rose is characterized by soft green, ferny foliage and soft, white petals. Its dichotomous nature presents occasional five-petaled flowers towards the end of its blooming season, though these are more of an exception than the norm. Originating from the Himalayas, India, Tibet, Burma, and Chin, Silky Rose is a hearty shrub reaching 6.5 feet, often sporting a spiny stem. Its deciduous leaves are 1–3 inches long, featuring 7–11 serrated leaflets. The white flowers, in their rarity of having just four petals, have a diameter of 1-2 inches. The development of the wing-prickles varies greatly even on a single plant. Adding to its charm, this rose produces red, globular, often bristly fruits, varying from 0.3-0.6 inches diameter with persistent sepals. Beyond its ornamental value, this rose has practical uses too. It is locally harvested as a food source and for medicinal use. The fragrant flowers make it a popular choice for garden cultivation, and its growth habit makes it apt as a hedge plant. Their fruits are used to infuse aromatic teas, offering a rich source of vitamins A, C, E, flavanoids, bio-active compounds, and essential fatty acids. The nutritious seeds can be ground into a powder for use as a dietary supplement. Delightfully fragrant and inherently beneficial, Silky Rose is truly a gem among roses.
