Fireweed, also known as Epilobium angustifolium, is a beautiful herb that thrives in wet calcareous to slightly acidic soils. It's often found in open fields, pastures, and particularly burned-over lands, which is how it got its name. As a pioneer species, Fireweed quickly colonizes open areas with little competition, making it the perfect addition to wild gardens. The showy four-petaled summer flowers in magenta or rose pink on straight stalks add a pop of color to any landscape. Fireweed self-sows and spreads by rhizomes to form colonies, making it easy to grow. Native to Europe, northern Asia, and North America, Fireweed is perfect for areas of forest newly cleared by cutting or fire. Its unique circular leaf veins make it easy to identify, and it's not toxic, so there's no need to worry about its similarity to other toxic lilies. Add Fireweed to your garden for a beautiful, easy-to-grow addition.
