If you appreciate striking foliage, then you'll love the Cordyline indivisa, also known as the Blue Dracaena, Broad-leaved Cabbage Tree or Mountain Cabbage Tree. This stunning evergreen tree stands out from other Cordyline species with its broad blue-grey leaves. As it grows, it creates a sturdy trunk 1-2.5 ft in diameter, reaching up to25 ft in height. The foliage of this plant is not only beautiful but distinctive as well; it droops with age transforming into a blue-green color and is shaped like a broad sword. You'll also find a broad midrib on these leaves that may be tinged with red, orange red or golden. Another captivating feature is its smaller, tightly compacted inflorescence, or flower cluster, which is produced from beneath the foliage. Native to New Zealand, the Cordyline indivisa also has its share of practical uses. The pith of the trunk can be dried and steamed until soft, and its sweet, starchy nature makes it perfect for porridge or a sweet drink. Furthermore, the root and stems are rich in fructose, making it a valuable plant to have around. Perfect for adding a tropical feeling to your landscape, the Blue Dracaena is a slow-growing tree and thrives best in cooler parts of locations with cool, moist soils and semi-shade conditions.
