This large shrub boasts attractive red-brown bark and white flowers in midsummer, followed by yellow-orange fall color. Native to the southeast U.S., it can reach a height of up to 6 meters and is commonly found in deciduous forests at elevations of 500-1400 meters. The acuminate leaves have teeth along the margins, and the solitary white flowers are a good source of nectar for butterflies. This plant is adaptable to shade but will bloom better with a few hours of direct sunlight.
