Araucaria columnaris, commonly known as Cook Pine or New Caledonian Pine, is a majestic and elegant evergreen conifer that serves as a striking focal point for gardens, parks, and streets in warm temperate regions. Native to New Caledonia and famously discovered by Captain Cook, this tree features a slender, columnar silhouette with its trunk often exhibiting a graceful curve that straightens as it matures, reaching impressive heights of 160-200 ft and a spread of 30-50 ft. Its small, spirally arranged, and overlapping green leaves transition from needle-like in youth to scale-like triangles in maturity. This dioecious species produces unique male and female cones; the egg-shaped female cones emerge on the upper branches, while the cylindrical, drooping male cones grace the lower branches. Thriving in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soils, Araucaria columnaris is easy to maintain with minimal pruning required. It is pest and disease resistant, with root rot as a concern in poorly drained soils. Ideal for USDA Zones 10-11, this tree offers year-round visual interest and sophistication to any landscape.
