Abies sibirica, also known as Siberian Fir, is a majestic evergreen tree native to the taiga region in Siberia, Turkestan, northeast Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Heilongjiang. This tree grows up to 100 ft tall and has a conical crown, grey-green to grey-brown bark and yellow-grey resinous shoots. The leaves are soft, needle-like, and aromatic, measuring 0.75-3 inches in length. Abies sibirica produces cylindrical cones that are 2-4 in long and 1-1.15 in broad, and the seeds have a triangular wing measuring 0.7-1.3 cm long. The tree thrives in cold boreal climates on moist soils in mountains or river basins at elevations of 6,200-7,800 ft and is frost-resistant, shade-tolerant, and hardy, surviving temperatures down to -58°F. People use essential oils extracted from the tree's leaves in aromatherapy and perfume. The soft and lightweight wood is used for construction, furniture, and wood pulp.
