Abies forrestii, also known as Forrest Fir, is a stunning conifer species in the Pinaceae family, endemic to China and Tibet. This majestic tree can grow up to 120 ft tall with a straight, round trunk and broadly conical crown. It is typically found in high mountains with a cold and wet climate. The bark starts as smooth, brown-gray, but with age, it becomes dark brown and longitudinally fissured. Its leaves are 0.5-1 in long, with slightly revolute margins, and the cones are broad and tapering to a short cusp. Abies forrestii is a variable species, with several recognized varieties. It grows in mixed forests at lower elevations, and in rhododendron woodlands, it may become a dominant member of the canopy. The timber is used for construction, and tannin is extracted from the bark. Abies forrestii is a species of least concern, making it a great addition to any garden or landscape design.
