Picea glehnii, also known as Sakhalin Spruce or Glehn’s Spruce, is a beautiful species of conifer with a unique chocolaty bark and stunning grained wood. Named after Russian botanist Peter von Glehn, this spruce is found in Japan and Russia, including on Hokkaido Island and Mount Hayachine of the Kitakami range in Japan and the Southern part of Russian island Sakhalin. It can grow up to 30 meters tall and grows well in cold and excessively wet soil on rocky subsoil. Its wood is often used in pianos, violins, and interiors of buildings, as well as in the pulp industry for making paper. Glehn’s Spruce is also highly valued in national parks in Japan and is included in the Red Book of Sakhalin region for conservation.
